Impaired driving

Charges under s. 320.13 to s. 320.18 of the Criminal Code — operation while impaired, operation with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 mg or over, refusal to provide a sample, and dangerous driving. These files often turn on the Charter, the lawfulness of the demand, and the reliability of the instrument or sample. Narang Defence takes a close, technical look at every step of the investigation.

Assault & violent offences

Common assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, aggravated assault, uttering threats, and robbery. Defences may include self-defence, identity, consent (where available in law), and challenges to the Crown's evidence. Each file is built on the specific facts and the law that applies to them.

Domestic violence

Allegations of domestic assault, breaches of release conditions and no-contact orders, and the overlap between criminal court and family court. Domestic files move quickly and have long-term consequences — for immigration status, custody and parenting time, and employment. They benefit from counsel who understands all of those streams at once.

Drug offences

Possession, possession for the purpose of trafficking, trafficking, importing, and production under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. These files frequently involve search warrants, vehicle stops, and informant evidence — all areas where the Charter and the Crown's disclosure obligations matter a great deal.

Theft & fraud

Theft under and over $5,000, fraud under and over $5,000 (s. 380), possession of stolen property, identity theft, and breach of trust. Fraud files often involve voluminous disclosure and complex transactional records; the defence work begins with a careful read of what the Crown actually has.

Sexual offences

Sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and child luring. These are among the most serious files in criminal court and involve specific procedural rules — including s. 276 and s. 278 applications. Narang Defence approaches them with the discretion and care they require.

Bail hearings

Show-cause hearings in the Alberta Court of Justice, bail reviews under s. 520 in the Court of King's Bench, and applications for release pending appeal. Bail is often the most urgent piece of a criminal file — getting it right early changes everything that follows.

Youth justice

Charges under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Youth files require particular attention to the principles of restraint, the long-term consequences of a youth record, and the alternatives to a custodial sentence built into the YCJA itself.

Appeals

Summary conviction appeals to the Court of King's Bench, indictable appeals to the Court of Appeal of Alberta, sentence appeals, and applications for leave. Appeals are written work — they live or die on the record and the factum — and Narang Defence approaches them accordingly.
